The 1st Meeting of Archaeometric Talks “Bridging Boundaries between Archaeology and Other Sciences in the Czech Republic”

The Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAR) at Charles University, in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology in Prague (ARÚ Praha) and the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (UTAM) of the Czech Academy of Science are pleased to invite you to the 1st Meeting of Archaeometric Talks entitled “Bridging Boundaries between Archaeology and Other Sciences in the Czech Republic”.

The integration of scientific methods and approaches into archaeological research and analysis provides archaeologists with important data that give us a deeper understanding of human history, technology, and culture. Recent archaeometric research has seen a remarkable expansion in both theoretical frameworks and methodological innovations.

This meeting aims to bring together all experts in the field of archaeometry from Czech institutions and laboratories providing archaeometric analyses in order to initiate a dialogue and build a communication network for the local archaeometric community. This first conference aspires to provide a suitable platform for sharing research projects and case-studies dealing with human history using scientific methods. The conference is divided into three main sessions covering the following topics:

• 1st session – How to study the organic archaeological data.

This session welcomes papers on scientific analysis apt to study organic materials, such as proteomics, paleopathology, palynology, botanical studies and more.
Keynote lecture: Prof. Matthew Collins, McDonald Professor of Palaeoproteomics (Archaeology), Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge; University of Copenhagen

• 2nd session – Digging deeper: scientific methods for exploring inorganic archaeological materials.

This session aims at addressing scientific methods for the study of the inorganic archaeological evidence. Due to the broadness of this topic, this session is divided following two main axes: the first one (Session 2A) welcomes papers on the topics of ceramic and metallurgy; while the second (Session 2B) offers the possibility to present research studies focusing on scientific methods for the analysis of glass, textiles, lithics, plasters and mortars.
Keynote lectures: Dr. Silvia Amicone, Institut für Ur- und Frühgeschichte, University of Tübingen (session 2A) and Dr. Jan Válek, Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the CAS (session 2B)

• 3rd session – How old are you and where do you come from? Dating methods and isotope analysis for Archaeology.

This session welcomes presentations on the topic of dating methods and isotope analysis for
Archaeology.
Keynote lecture: to be announced.

Abstract submission: Please send the abstracts (supplemented by title, authors, institutional affiliation, 5 keywords, session) to archaeometrictalks@gmail.com, specifying in the subject your name, surname, and title of the presentation. Abstracts will be accepted for oral and poster presentation (students only) and should not exceed 300 words (excluding title, authors, and keywords).
Deadline for submitting abstracts: 30.6.2024
Announcement of program: 20.8.2024
Registration period: 20.8.–30.9.2024
Conference fee: 500 CZK, free for students
