Department of Natural Sciences and Archaeometry

The main research topic of the Department of Natural Sciences and Archaeometry is the relationship of man to natural resources, the process of their acquisition, transformation and cultural and economic consequences that result from these processes for human society in different periods, environments and economies (hunting-gathering, agricultural, pastoral, etc.). Within these issues, the key periods for us are cultural and economic changes, when subsistence strategies change (eg hunting and harvesting in agriculture, changes in economic strategies) or new materials are established (eg stone raw materials, metals, glass). Problems addressed include livelihood strategies, intra- and inter-cultural contacts, mobility of artifacts and living individuals, and changes in the natural environment. An integral part of the study forms technological procedures, issues of basic and advanced production and distribution of nutrients, raw materials, artifacts, as well as ideas and know-how.
