Department of Historical Archaeology

The main research tasks of the Department of Historical Archaeology are, in terms of time, concentrated in the Early and High Middle Ages and the Post-medieval period, i. e. historical periods with the strongest impact on the creation of national and local cultural identities. As in other periods examined by archaeological methods, the research is primarily based on remains of settlement structures, as well as burials and elements of material culture. The currently targetted topics predominantly rely on finds obtained by the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague during its archaeological fieldwork, which consists of archaeological documentation of several important Early Medieval sites since.

Another important sphere represent the topics connected to the results of archaeological research, which are being set within the context of the wider Central European area.

The Department of Historical Archaeology includes three detached workplaces: Prague Castle, Vyšehrad, Mariánské Radčice.
