Science Fair 2025

We would like to invite you to the Science Fair – the largest popular science event in the Czech Republic, organized by the Academy of Sciences since 2015. The event takes place from 5 to 7 June at the PVA Expo Praha in Letňany, admission is free.

Our stand will focus on the anniversary on One hundred years of archaeological excavations at Prague Castle

The commencement of rescue archaeological research in the third courtyard on 4 June 1925 marks the beginning of the continuous activity of the Institute of Archaeology of the CAS, Prague (IAP) at Prague Castle.

For a hundred years, against a changing socio-political background, this institution has been involved in creating a picture of the most important monument closely linked to Czech history. Archaeological excavations have captured a wide range of evidence of the development of this site, from traces of prehistoric settlement through the formation of the ecclesiastical and monarchical centre to the very recent past. In politically favourable times, thanks to the joint efforts of archaeologists, architects and the Office of the President of the Republic, exceptional monuments have been preserved in so-called archaeological complexes. It is thus not only possible to revise the situations uncovered today, but there is also room for new research. The century-long continuity of the IAP is a commitment to a responsible approach to this archaeological site.

In cooperation with the the Office, the IAP is involved in heritage conservation. An integral part of our work is the processing and evaluation of material culture finds. In the evaluation of archaeological sources, we use the latest technologies and analytical methods. The proof of this is the mobile application Prague Castle Archaeological, which was launched last year. In addition to it, you can enjoy a demonstration of archaeological findings from Prague Castle or try out the work of an archaeologist at the stand.
