Abstract:

The Natufian Culture of the terminal Pleistocene Levant (ca. 15,000 – 12,000 cal BP) presents an outstanding archaeological record that includes numerous stone-built constructions and evidence for intensified economic and social lives. The talk will survey how different scholars have interpreted this record since its initial discovery at el-Wad Cave in the 1930s. Then, I will present the ongoing high-resolution research at the same site and other Natufian sequences, which A) explains the Natufian as a novel adaptation of foraging groups to sedentary living, and B) showcases the complex settlement dynamics during these millennia.
