The goal of the proposed two-years grant is to present a picture of the Germanic settlements in Bohemia during the Migration period with an accent on the 6th century AD. This is a weakly known phase of our history. Basic data were yielded by a large-scale excavation at Březno and its evaluation. The project shall be linked with the information achieved.
Traces of the Migration period settlements are scarce. However recently revealed discoveries in central and north-western Bohemia shall help in completing our knowledge. During the 6th century AD most of the Germanic tribes emigrated from Central Europe. The project will involve a comparison of the situation in Bohemia and in adjacent regions, especially those in central Germany eastwards and westwards of the Elbe river.
