This volume collects together studies devoted to an understanding of the earliest history the Prague Castle and Malá Strana (Lesser Quarter). This thoroughly documented explanation of the archaeological finds makes public for the first time 8th – 9th century strctures and contexts discovered in the course of long-term research. This data, along with the results of analyses of period vegetation and the extent of its influence on human activity, necessitates considerable revision of the opinions previously held regerding the fortified centre of the Bohemian state and the origins of the settlement at the foot of the castle spur. The role of raw material lodes is discussed in the framework of a reconstructionof the geological situation. The excavation methods, the results of which are given, firmly place Czech centres of archaelogy among the best in Europe.
